Nestling
This is not the story of a Mom and her bairn. Or a story that began far across the pond in Lewes, Sussex and that continues here today in Asheville, NC; a small town nestled in blue mountains.
Instead, it is a series of small observations.
Since the birth of my son, it has become more and more important to me to remember the little (and often forgotten) moments. In "A Life's Work", Rachel Cusk's brilliant, insightful and brutally honest account of motherhood she talks about nostalgia. She says that you can never really understand the concept of nostalgia until have a child - and feel nostalgic for the very moments passing before your eyes.
The Nestling turned five last weekend. I have in rapid succession loved, and lost, the clear-eyed newborn. The one-year old shelf-scaling maniac. The two-year old singer of small songs. The three-year old "Do-It-Yourself". And, most recently, the four-year old desperate for a skateboard, a lion, and all the new trappings that go with growing another year older...
